VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory)

Author: Jim Cantrell

VMI is a business model in which the buyer of a product that provides some information from a supplier of this product and the supplier must be much more large or full responsibility for maintaining an inventory of material in accordance generally Buyer location of consumers (usually from a store but often in a factory or warehouse). A third logistics provider may also be involved to ensure that the buyer has the required level of inventory through adjustment of demand and supply gaps. Typically, retail information, provided that the seller is in the form of an EDI document 852.
As a symbiotic relationship, VMI makes it less likely that companies will become your will out of stock of a product and reducing inventory in the supply chain. Moreover, Provider (suppliers) in a tent to the Vendor representatives ensure that the product is displayed and store staff are familiar with the characteristics of product line while helping to clean and organize their product lines for the store.
One of the keys to VMI work is shared risk. Often, if the inventory is not sold, the seller (supplier) will repurchase the product the buyer (seller). In other cases, the product may be in possession of the retailer, but is not vested in the seller until the sale takes place, which means that the seller just selling houses (and support) the product in exchange for a certain commission, or nonprofit. A form of this particular case, the Commission on trade-based exploration while VMI is of general application, but is not required for use.
This is one of the successful business model of Wal-Mart and many other retailers. Home Depot uses the technique with larger suppliers of manufactured products. VMI helps to promote understanding and closer cooperation between the supplier and the distributor or retailer using EDI, statistical methods of forecasting and maintain an adequate inventory in the supply chain. Sellers benefit from greater control of the displays and more contact to impart knowledge on employees, retailers benefit from reduced risk, better store staff knowledge (based brand loyalty for both the supplier and retailer), and reduction cost of the maintenance screen.
In the industry of retail sales today would be impossible to automate an application VMI - or even less accurately and without an EDI system. But hundreds of companies running highly successful VMI programs using the following types of EDI services:
• In the home of EDI
· Hosted EDI (SaaS, ASP, etc. ..)
· Service Bureau
· Portals Hybrid
VMI is a document intensive replenishment system. The amount of data including in some 852 documents can be huge, but this information can be much, much bigger. Consider this scenario:
1. You receive a series of 852 documents of your business associate on Sunday night. These sales reflect the previous week for all retail stores.
2. Using specialty or service or any medium, create your sales orders (internal documentation) of the 852.
3. You may be required by your TP for sending documents 856 (per store).
4. You can be required to return documents 810 (per store).
The 852 is a receiving point, can and is mainly the result of a significant expense of additional documents, depending on his program and his business partner. In many If the program is required to return to the supplier 855 before sending the 856. It's sort of head to keep dealers' Hey, go to data, this is what ships "In addition to other details. In other scenarios, organized by the suppliers of the system design must make a" false " a PO in your system (852 data) before the creation of a document 856 or 810.
The 852 is a powerful document derived from POS (Point of Sale) data obtained in each shop. Here is a list of EDI documents that are often included in a VMI relationship.
