Iron Graphite
What are the differences in the properties of cast iron and graphite?
Due to the high carbon content that contains all sources Graphite - either as carbon angry (malleable), flakes (flake and compacted graphite iron) or nodules (nodular, spheroidal cast iron). Malleable Irons not are common these days as heat treatment, steel is a cheaper alternative. Irons Flake (laminar) issued less ductile graphite - that do not extend much before they break (typically <1%). The hardness is approximately 240HB, tensile strength 250MPa in the region (15 STI)-These are only guidelines, and can be a wide variation in properties! Compacted Graphite (aka vermicular graphite) in Cast iron is slightly stronger and more flexible - typically 350MPa / 5% with the same harshness. nodules (spheroids) graphite cast irons are much stronger (400-500MPa UTS) and ductile (15%). They also show a degree of plastic deformation that is not found in other types described above.
